Comparing Horror Rap Super Groups Psychopathic Rydas And Dark Lotus
For such a small genre, you wouldnt think that horror rap would be the most hospitable place to form a super group. However, as music analysts and fans are finally realizing, the more niche a musical genre (like horror rap), the more potential it has to blow up.
Because horror rap is about as far away as you can get from the mainstream, it makes perfect sense that its found great success with all those music enthusiasts out there who just cant relate to Brittany Spears “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”
For those of you in tune with the horror rap scene, you already know that Im going to be talking primarily about Dark Lotus and Psychopathic Rydas. Its obvious that both have a fair amount in common right off the bat: Psychopathic Rydas and Dark Lotus are made up of artists associated with Psychopathic Records (the foremost horror rap record label in the world), both Psychopathic Rydas and Dark Lotus well known in the horror rap scene, and both Psychopathic Rydas and Dark Lotus have been active within the last 5 years.
And of course, it would be remiss not to mention that these two horror rap outfits, Psychopathic Rydas and Dark Lotus, are essentially the same people performing under two different names. Psychopathic Rydas consists of both ICP founders, both Twiztid members, Chris Rouleau (Blaze Ya Dead Homie) and James Lowery (Anybody Killa). Any the Dark Lotus contingent consists of(drumroll please) the same people with the exception of ABK!
Youre saying to yourself, why would the same people form two bands with different names? How different can their horror rap music really be? Well, there is quite a big difference, actually.
First and foremost, Psychopathic Rydas are essentially mixtape artists. Unlike Dark Lotus, who writes and records all original material, Psychopathic Rydas takes the beats from popular horror rap artists and places their own lyrical contributions on top.
Before you go off on a rant about how this is inauthentic, know that this group is just meant to be fun. Psychopathic Rydas is not trying to sell millions of records or win awards for originality. In fact, they even gave their first album away for freeall fans had to do was answer a series of trivia questions correctly to get their copy.
Dark Lotus, on the other hand, takes itself about as seriously as a super group in the horror rap genre can be expected to do so. Their lyrics are darker, their clothing is darker, and the general ambience around Dark Lotus just feels more real than the jovial tone found in Psychopathic Rydas rhymes.
Dark Lotus even has a little bit of a metaphor enmeshed in their mission, with each horror rapper acting as “one petal of the lotus.” The fact that they thought enough about this groups role and purpose in the bigger picture proves how seriously they take it.
