Maternity Photography – Preparation, Poses And Locations

Every woman and her husband want to see their maternity photographs most impressive and conveying. However there are no standards to judge the quality of maternity photography. All depends upon the personal liking and preferences. Even then, there are three major constituents of maternity photography. These are preparation, poses and locations. Even if you opt to hire the services of a professional photographer, you need to be involved actively at every stage. No photographer can deliver the best in desired way without the cooperation of model. It is the combined responsibility to get the best photographs of each and every session. As most of the expectant mothers are inexperienced for this activity, therefore they need basic guidance prior to the very first session of pregnancy photography.

First of all you need to prepare yourself mentally and physically both. You must be convinced with the benefits of pregnancy stage photography. You must try to involve your family members in to this act. It will eliminate all the shyness that you may face during the sessions. Apart from this, the involvement of family members makes the photographs more meaningful. Next important activity under preparation is the selection of dresses and makeup. No particular dresses are required. Open neck front open shirts, low belly jeans and short frocks etc are good to wear during the session. These dresses make the belly exposing easy during the photography session. As the maternity photography is aimed to capture your facial expressions and motherly look, so it is better to pose with utmost simplicity. Just sprinkle some talcum powder over the belly and hands. But do not put on dark facial makeup.

It may not be possible or feasible to follow the poses defined in the maternity photography books or shown at the concerned sites. It is you, who will think about and decide the poses according to your own liking. Do not pose too much stylish. Sitting on the bed or chair, standing straight, leaning little forward and lying over the bed and walking are the comfortable poses. Presence of children or husband gives you more ideas to pose. In any case do not compromise with your comfort. You may hold something beautiful in your hands. Flower bunch can be used to hide the body part that you do not want to hide.

Third important thing, you need to think about is the location. You have sufficient choices to choose according to your convenience. The first phase sessions should be held outdoor while the sessions at the later stage should be kept indoor or near the house. Garden, beach, park, terrace, amusement parks and bedroom are some ideal location.

Plan your maternity photography well ahead of first session or even before contacting the photographer. Do not allow him to govern you; instead discuss every issue with him open mindedly. Remember, getting good maternity photographs is a combined fun filled activity- it is not a task.

Maternity Photography – Do It Yourself With Strategic Approach

Pregnancy stage is a special time in every woman’s life. Maternity photos should reflect those unique feelings, expressions and bodily developments in impressive manner. When couples decide in favor of maternity photography, their major concern is the cost. Many couples decide to do it themselves to make it pocket friendly affair. It is not a bad practice at all; however, they must have some basic knowledge of photography.

Maternity photography is different from other kinds of photography in many ways. The simplicity is the core of pregnancy photographs. These are more focused upon the developed belly area but we can’t ignore the other body parts completely. It allows the freedom to choose the location but the selection depends upon the comfort level of model. Indoor and outdoor both locations have their own attractions. Third trimester is considered as the best time to schedule first pregnancy period photography session. Before the commencement of first maternity photography session, model must be ready and convinced with comprehensive plan. Numbers of photos, involvement of other, poses, locations, time gap between the sessions and preparation for each session etc are the main aspects that need special attention.

Every photo should be fresh. You can infuse the freshness in each and every maternity photograph by changing the location, background, getup or lighting. The maternity models have their own likings and photographer can’t compel them to change their priority. However, you, as an experienced photographer, can encourage them to adjust with the genuine requirements of maternity photography.

After deciding to do pregnancy photography yourself, list all the parameters and requirements. Various maternity websites, books, forums and friends may help you to get familiar with most aspects. Before considering the suggestions, compare your living conditions and parameters with the standard ones. If you feel satisfied and comfortable with recommendations, go ahead; otherwise, find out the better way to deal with that particular issue.

Maternity photography is family affair, try to make it involving instead trying to glamorize it. Presence of your family members, kids, pets and lovely toys make the photographs more personal. Mark all the photographs with suitable titles and date after the completion of pregnancy period photography. It will help you recall your experience in better way besides making the viewers more interesting. Do not put these photographs along with other photographs; this practice may rob maternity attraction from the photographs making them just the simple photographs. Hopefully you would not like this and will prefer to devote sometime for exploring the reliable information sources.

Create A New Photography Style Using Led Flashlights

Flashlight photography is an emerging technique being pursued by photographers. Using a flashlight in photography allows a photographer a new avenue of imagination and creativity for the photographer. When used correctly, LED flashlights can mimic natural lights and create effects not possible in photo imagining and manipulation software. LED lights allow the light source to be directly controlled by the photographer’s vision. The following are some basic equipment tips and techniques.

The Right Camera
The single-lens reflex camera, or SLR, uses a mirror to accurately reflect to the photographer the same scene that the camera does. The digital SLR, or D-SLR, has the same capabilities as the film SLR, but uses a memory card instead of film. Either type of camera is great for flashlight photography because you can adjust the shutter to a long speed, which is perfect for LED light techniques.

LED Light Tips and Techniques
It is helpful to use a lot of LED lights to get a good quality picture. LED lights tend to be on the small side, and don’t give off a whole lot of light. But don’t worry – LED lights are fairly cheap and you can get dozens of them for just a dollar or so.
LED lights are wonderful hard lighting sources, because the light of LED flashlights is extremely focused. A photographer can use the LED flashlights by placing one or more flat on the ground in order to light up the bottom of an object or some other specific focal object. If you need LED lighting going upward, stack LED lights on top of each other in tripod fashion.

Another way to use LED flashlights is to use self-adhesive Velcro to make a hook strap that wraps around the lens of your camera. Allow two extra centimeters slack for attaching some loop Velcro. Connect the loop side to the hook side with the adhesive side facing outwards. Next, attach the LED lights to the adhesive side one at a time until you cover the entire strap, and voila! You now have your very own LED lighting source for pointing LED light directly at objects, and you hardly spent a dime.

Natural Photography and LED Lights
Combining LED lights with other flashlights, natural light or camera lights can achieve interesting experimental effects. Try using a flashlight held in front of your camera flash with no direct sunlight. The combined lights can add a natural warmness to your photo, making your photo interesting and unique. Another experiment is using different white balances through different colored gels or color filters in front of white LED lights. This technique can simulate several white balances of natural light. LED lights can also be used to “paint” light across an image by using a slow shutter speed and sweeping the LED flashlight across the scene.

Using macro techniques, where the lens to subject distance is much closer than usual, LED flashlights allow the photographer to mimic and/or enhance night shots. This method can allow an aesthetic white balance in spot lighting photography sessions.

The Evolution Of Photography The Beginning

Photography! Who could have thought that we would now be able to take pictures through a digital camera and transfer to a computer and change the colors or any of the attributes of an image or a photograph? Digital cameras are sharper and provide high quality pictures that can be used over multiple mediums.

Sir John Herschel is a man who invented the term Photography’ in 1839.

This was also the year when the process of Photography was unveiled to the public.

How did photography really evolve? Well! It is the bi-product of laws of physics and compounds of chemistry. The evolution of photography is a completely scientific process starting with the use of optics in the 1830’s.

The dark room or Camera Obscura existed some four hundred years back, while cameras were being used since the 11th century and yet photography did not come into public use before the 1830’s.

There were different observations made by several people that finally led to putting together of all the missing pieces and this also announced the advent of photography. Some of those important observations are:

* In the 15th century, Robert Boyle found out that silver chloride turned dark when exposed to air and not light.

* In the early 1800’s Angelo Sala observed that when silver nitrate powder is kept in the sun for long, it turns black.

* Around 1727, Johann Heinrich Schulze made a discovery regarding colors. There were some liquids that changed their colors when they were exposed to light.

* Thomas Wedgwood conducted some experiments in the early 19th century. He had captured images but could make the images permanent.

* The first ever successful production of a photograph emerged in the June-July of 1827 by Joseph Nicphore Nipce. The material used for this became hard when exposed to light for almost 8 hrs. Nipce went into a partnership with Louis Daguerre on 4th Jan, 1829 to work further on this.

Four years later in 1833, Nipce died and Daguerre continued alone to discover how to develop photographic plates. Invention of the photographic plates meant that the exposure time was reduced considerably, from 8 hrs to 30 minutes. He also made another important observation and the conclusion drawn was that immersing an image in salt would make it permanent.

Paul Delaroche, a leading French scholar made a report on this and the French government bought the rights in July 1839, and made it public on 19th Aug, 1839. This process was named Daguerreotype after Louis Daguerre.

The Daguerreotype process was expensive and one time affair. At that time there were no negatives available and hence the original photograph could not be reproduced. The only way of getting two copies was by using two cameras side by side. This led to the growing need of finding a way to copy pictures and finally led to the invention of the Calotype process by William Henry Fox Talbot.

Although the Daguerreotype was superior to the Calotype, the latter was able to provide multiple positive prints of a single picture in 1840. This was the calling of a new dawn!

Stuck For Photography Career Ideas Here’s 5…

Recently I was out and about with a friend who’s just completed an evening course in digital photography. He really does have the eye for a good shot and manages to always come up with original composures. However he had no idea how turn his talent into a career. He doesn’t want to do commercial photography regarding products etc, and that was as far as his thoughts went…How can someone so creative be, at the same time, so lacking in ideas?! So I thought I’d come up with a few options for him:

Portrait, Family & Baby Photography

Some photographers naturally find that they are betting at working with people. This can extend to either full on formal portraits or more candid shots. There is a great call for this style of photography today, but you have to be well rounded and able to produce a number of styles.

Many people still want the formal portrait photography, either single of family shots. While this doesn’t essentially lend itself to great creativity, this style will be more a test of your technical knowledge and people will expect a very high quality portrait.

However, more and more younger couples and families are enjoying the more candid ‘action’ portraits. This is where the photographer gets to be more creative and will set up a few scenarios while letting the family naturally engage with each other. While you don’t always get the ‘face first’ photograph, you often capture a more intimate feel of the subject.

Nature Photography

Many freelance photographers enjoy nature photography, whether just for personal interest or for any paid work. However nature photography isn’t just a ‘turn up and shoot’ option. To be successful you really should be passionate about this and the subject; patience is just as important as talent when dealing with nature photography.

Thorough research is essential. You must know your subject, where to find it? The best times to find it? How to approach? What equipment is needed? Don’t always expect to get the results you want from one sitting.

Build up your portfolio and submit your images to nature magazines or production companies and see where it could take you.

Travel Photography

Another one for the freelancer (unless you are very lucky and manage to affiliate yourself with travel / TV production companies) who wants to combine personal passions with work.

To stand out in this field you really need to be able to look at things in a way that others don’t. You may be taking shots of a landscape or monument that many have seen before, but can you make it seem new or original?

It’s not just packing up your camera and jumping on a plane however. Again, research is paramount. Learn the rules of the country and areas you want to photograph (not everyone welcomes a happy snapper). Try and visit areas that have relevance to world affairs. It’s not just about recording your journey; it’s making emotive reactions with people who may never have visited the area before.

Architectural Photography

For many city dwellers, the surrounding architecture and urban scenes are their landscapes and the recording of them is not only for commercial reasons but also for cultural recording.

There are many opportunities nowadays for an architectural photographer. Real Estate is of course a large industry to tap into; interior and exterior shots of building and residences and also their surrounding areas. You could also try architectural services and publications – going for structural shots, interiors and exteriors as well as works in progress. Proving yourself reliable and capable in this field could generate lots of repeat work.

There are also of course niches within this field – Historical publications, Religious publications (churches etc), Travel Publications etc.

Wedding Photography

Last but not least is one of the largest options for a professional photographer – wedding photography.

This is becoming less and less of a seasonal occupation now, with couples choosing more varied times of year for their nuptials. This means that you must be adaptable to light and weather conditions, while having the main skills of group and couple shots, being able to communicate with families without being an ‘intruder’ to the day.

The best wedding photographers are those whom you don’t realise are there all day. Often it’s a 2 man job nowadays, to get the mix of staged shots and candid shots. Versatility is also key, can you offer modern styles? Contemporary? Classical and traditional? You will find most couples have a definite idea of what they want.

Of course there are many other paths a photographer can go down, from sports and adventure work, newspaper photo-journalism to glamour work. Have a think about the subjects and styles you most enjoy and then see were this could take you. Be creative in your approach to who may want your pictures and never, never give up!

The Need To Develop A Niche In Microstock Photography

Initially, when are first accepted the tendency is to submit everything you shoot to the library. Not a bad idea to quickly build up your portfolio and start earning. However, pre-judge each image for size, quality and content. In other words edit you submission carefully. Then once you have uploaded every saleable image on your hard drive start to think about making your mark by creating a niche.

What you have to do is simply take stock of the images that you can shoot and they will sell. The more clearly defined the niche the easier it is to establish. From my website you will gather that I shoot property. Basically because I came from a construction background and the subjects were all around me. And they are fairly good sellers.

Landscapes is a niche, but it is oversubscribed. You need to specialise further. I know a photographer that specialises in Steam trains. Another photographer I know, shoots amazing landscapes mainly in the Yorkshire Dales. After a while, because they make regular submissions on the subject, they are classed as experts in their field. I have had request for interior images from buyers after they have viewed my portfolio.

So you need to assess you interests, potential sales and how easily you can shoot the subject. I’m not going to tell you shoot only subjects for your niche. But shooting for your niche gives your photography a direction. Instead of sat there, with a mental block, wondering what to shoot today, you will have an idea based on your niche. Of course whilst out shooting fresh images you will then come across photo opportunities to add to your portfolio.

So how do you decide your niche?

Well I looked at the picture opportunities around me. I have always worked in construction, so that an obvious choice I suppose. So the first thing to do is to look at the niches already available to you. Look at your other hobbies and interests. You may have a neighbour, friend or relation that has an unusual hobby or occupation. You may be a collector of antiques or live in a large city.

The best thing to do is sit down and make a list. And I don’t me a general list, I mean a specific list. For example don’t write landscapes, write down ‘North Yorkshire Moors’. You may know a Dentist; this would be an excellent opportunity. Medical subjects always sell well.

Once you have a good idea about your niche, make a few searches in the Libraries. I tend to search iStock as it gives you an accurate number of views and downloads. You can also put them in order of popularity so you can see instantly the best sellers.

Developing a niche will improve your photography as you will focus on the chosen subject and come up with more creative ideas. But that won’t stop you shooting and submitting other subjects and allow you to build up your portfolio. You can also develop more than one niche and see what subjects sell the best. Personally I find it better to test your ideas before throwing yourself into one particular subject.

The beauty of the Microstock Market is that you can test and experiment and it costs nothing to try. So sit down and make that list. It’s amazing what subjects you will come up with!

Tamron 60mm – Best Lens For Macro Photography Beginner

At some point in your photography, there will come a time when you feel that all your images look similar, dull or boring. If this happens to you, do not see it as a sign that you should give up photography!

It happened to me earlier in my career and thankfully there is an easy solution to this problem. You need is a new vision. Welcome to the world of macro photography. In this world, you will get extremely and intimately close to your subject, making the ordinary world looks extraordinary. With macro photography, you can turn ordinary object such as flowers, ants or even a grain of salt into a fascinating one.

When you’re just starting out with macro photography, I would recommend you shoot flowers. They look wonderful and pretty when viewed very closely. However, your new vision will require a special photographic lens: a Macro lens.

A macro lens is a lens that will allow you to focus very close to your subject and give you 1:1 ratio. This means that the lens can project the actual, real size of the subject to the camera’s sensor.

A macro lens will not come cheap. Most of them cost USD $700 or more. If you are just starting out with macro photography, I would not recommend spending this much at first.

That being said, I found a particularly good and affordable lens that I highly recommend for macro photography beginners: the Tamron 60mm f/2 1:1 Macro. The lens is light, sharp and allows you to take many wonderful pictures when you’re just starting out in your macro photography journey.

The Tamron 60mm f/2 features a fast aperture, the fast currently available on the market. With this fast aperture, you’ll be able to take sharp macro pictures and excellent portraits with beautiful background. Tamron updated its optical element so it is capable of delivering extremely sharp result for any user.

As a user this lens will let you experiment and will grow with you over time as you develop your macro photography skill. For anyone who is looking for the first macro lens to get, I highly recommend this lens.

Secrets of Choosing the Right Style of Wedding Photography for your Wedding Day

What is Wedding Photography?

For many couples, this may sound strange question to ask, most will say that wedding photography wedding photography done in kind. This is partly true. But that over simplifies the meaning of wedding photography. Wedding Photography Art changed tremendously over the last twenty years. Today it may even have a different meaning for each couple.

In the past, wedding photographers are technicians behind a black box almost mystical that very few would even try to operate it. Then, the wedding couples hire wedding photographers to produce wedding pictures of their big day. This is simply to record the event. And the one they chose to do six wedding day.

Almost all wedding guests have their own digital camera that could produce well-exposed pictures at a very minimal cost. What this means is that professional wedding photographers must have something more to offer their wedding couples. At the same time, the digital revolution also allowed wedding photographers the new technologies to offer something different. This is one of the reasons why wedding photography has improved compared to what it was years ago.

It also attracted people who never venture into wedding photography if not a new technology of digital photography. Wedding photographers are the recommendation of the President beautiful and stunning images to record the wedding of art and narrative, sometimes evocative and most flattering way time.

However, this also means that there is a wedding photographer today, one has to be able to offer something not seen before. True to the complexities of wedding photography today, this may not be true anymore that all wedding photographers are the same and that all wedding couples want the same kind of photography.

Here is a guide to photography techniques

The good thing about the internet is it allows you to easily explore a large number of wedding photographers work. Check some photographers’ website and you’ll be amazed by the different photographic styles.

Reports Photography also known as photojournalism or documentary photography, it is best described to have an approach which simply covers and document the event without directing the wedding couple or their guests. Instead, he tries to capture the event as it happens in the most natural and creative way.

Traditional wedding photography is used to describe the old-fashioned way of lining up the wedding couple, their guests and family of traditional photos.

Contemporary wedding photography can be described as glossy which can be trendier than traditional wedding photography.

My humble advice is to look beyond the labels of wedding photography. It can be more confusing than being helpful in deciding what kind of wedding photography suites you as a wedding couple. Another reason is that the style often times is a combination of several photography styles anyway. Third, it means that wedding photographers offer just one style of photography during their wedding coverage.

Indeed, the Weddings offer wedding photographers to show different photography styles. Wedding photographers sometimes just can not ask the couple to move to a place where there is a better light during the wedding ceremony. In addition, it is quite often that couples expect the official photos that show them at their best. Even the most modern weddings will require having traditional and formal family photos.
